Sumo Paint Photo Editing Software – Honest Review!

Spread the love

Overview

Sumo Paint Photo Editing Software is a full-packed online photo editor that allows you to manage basic photo editing. It also offers a profound set of basic color correction tools that are specially designed for drawing and designing. There are a large number of filters, effects and brushes are available to get your work done more efficiently.

Sumopaint Photo Editing Software offers you several unique and innovative digital drawing tools. For example, you can use the Symmetry Tool that allows you to create beautiful symmetric patterns and geometric shapes in your designs.

Basic functions such as creating, deleting, and duplicating layers are complemented by a variety of effects, such as translucency, shadow casting, gradient, and more. The list doesn’t end here. It has got some amazing features which won’t fail you.

But what is annoying is that and a major drawback which makes the editor worse than the other alternatives is its speed.

According to the survey, it took people about 20 minutes to correct the skin tone and remove a couple of pimples on the face using masks, while in Photoshop the same task can be handled within 5-10 minutes.

Some Pros:-

  • User-friendly interface
  • No intrusive advertising
  • Masks and layers
  • Well-developed tools for digital drawing
  • Desktop version

Major Drawbacks

  • Requires Flash
  • Some tools lag
  • Imperfect text management
  • Unjustified price

Interface and Functionality!

The interface and layout of the photo editing tools in SumoPaint resembles Photoshop or Pixlr to a great extent.

Keeping that fact aside, it is quite simple and effective to use. What is really satisfying is that it is free from distracting advertising. It is something that is quite rare even among the best free online photo editors. Online platforms without ads are bliss!

The SumoPaint app offers both a free version with limited functionality and a Pro version with all the photo editing features.

But, Sumopaint photo editor free version is practically unusable, as about 80 percent of all tools are unavailable. What developers had in mind while setting such strict limits is dubious.

It is worth noting that there is no Sumo Paint mobile application that could simplify the work in situations where you don’t have access to your laptop or it isn’t functional. Who knows, their developers might come with something exciting in recent years!

The Desktop Version!

Sumo Paint is a very simple photo editing platform for basic image retouching and digital painting.

It has been around in the market for a long time. Recently, it received a worthy update, which drew a lot of attention and became a good reason to take a look at it.

Create an account before starting because the service provides a full desktop version with a 30 day free trial only for registered users.

Similarity with Photoshop

The SumoPaint photo editor offers you two different options for importing images:

  • You can do it via URL
  • From your PC.

It successfully downloads RAW files without any issues. The editor also supports PSD, PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIF formats. That’s a plus point as most of the major photo files are supported in this software.

The interface of this web application successfully complies with the established standards for a classy application.

The toolbar containing all the essential tools is located on the left of the home page. The center consists of the editing area. And on the right is the panel with history, layers, color palette, and all other alternatives.

There is also an attractive and useful menu bar on the top and a property bar for custom selected tools.

The tools are conveniently located and, what is most important and worth mentioning, 80 percent of the entire window is reserved for the working space.

In this software, you will find numerous useful brushes, fills, gradients, and auto-generated shapes. Dozens of these filters allow you to generate beautiful effects. And what’s most exciting is that all of it can be done through a single click.

All processing, even the most complex, is implemented instantly! It saves your time a lot.

Custom Brushes for Wonderful Artists

SumoPaint is much more focused on drawing rather than photo editing if researched in detail.

But it is not in the ability of the performance of a complex image processing solution like Adobe Photoshop

One of the best things that definitely stands out and is worth mentioning is that it has a huge variety of brushes, brush styles, brush effects, as well as a large number of advanced settings.

These are somethings you definitely don’t wanna miss out on!

Advanced Layer Settings

In this section, we will look into the advanced layer settings of

Sumopaint photo editor.

The layers menu consists of a group of actions and features. Some examples are:

  • Add a new layer.
  • Delete a layer.
  • Duplicate.
  • Layer effects.
  • Bring to front.
  • Move the layer up.
  • Move the layer down.
  • Send it to the back.

If you have ever used Canva, you can relate to it more.

These SumoPaint features are pretty good, and it offers a lot of advanced settings.

The tools are implemented in the same style as Adobe Photoshop, which allows you to manage features like

  • Drop shadow
  • Inner shadow
  • Outer glow
  • Inner glow
  • Bevel
  • Color overlay
  • Stroke
  • Gradient bevel
  • Gradient glow
  • And many more!

Gradient bevel and the gradient fill tool display a sample and allow you to see what the gradient will look like before you apply it.

Colour Correction Tools

Using the adjustment tool, you can make changes to factors such as brightness/contrast, color balance, color temp, curves, gradient map, hue/saturation, and levels.

People tried several of them and reported some flaws in these tools.

For example, After activating the brightness contrast tool, two sliders appear, and nothing more. The sliders are pretty badly designed. The insensitive setup of sensitivity is too high.

It is always better to change the numbers manually when it comes to this application.

Retouching of a selected area is also not available while editing photos. This makes it worse.

They could have worked on the detailing better. Colour balance and color temperature follow the same principle.

The Curves tool is comparatively designed better for working, but it also lacks some details. The detailing of this instrument ends with the choice of preset curves and color channels. Only four colors are available. It feels limited by the color palette.

Besides, after setting the required parameters, people noticed that the responsiveness and processing speed were very low which makes it worse.

The photo twitched convulsively before the change was applied. Though the tool completes its task, it performs at a lower level than other desktop photo editors. If you have a lower-end computer this is one of the best you can have

The auto levels feature is pretty efficient and serves the purpose. The tool does its job accurately.

When experimented with, the function was slightly overdone and highlighted the tone of the face too much. But in general, it made the image a little better. You can always tweak the auto adjustments later on.

Advanced Features

After reviewing and testing several filters from its collection, I was quite impressed that the detail and elaboration of most filters correspond to the high level set by Lightroom. It was something unexpected.

Some of the collections are:

  • 3D effects
  • Blur
  • Distort
  • Edge detection
  • Light effects
  • Noise
  • Pixelate
  • Sharpen
  • Stylize
  • Texture
  • Fractal

After selecting the filter you like, a menu appears in which you can adjust the effect in more detail using several sliders.

Some of the factors like distance radius, focus, tilt, rotation, bumpiness, and atmosphere can be easily controlled through sliders. It is convenient to try all of them and choose what’s best for you.

In addition to that, you can also choose one of the available artificial light sources: intense light up, intense light right, intense light down, soft light, hard light, camera flash, metallic relief, and more.

This feature was designed and implemented well by Sumopaint, but the responsiveness and speed of image post-processing are quite disappointing!

Conclusion

In conclusion, when compared to any other photo editing software, it would reach the Adobe class, but would definitely beat applications like Paint.net.

So, this was an honest review of Sumopaint. I have included all the major takeaways and drawbacks. I hope you gained enough knowledge and it would be of great use to you.

Comment your opinion.

Happy Editing!
